Mechanical Signalling in Plymouth

This covers the Plymouth area from Saltash to Marsh Mills and Plympton on the GWR, and from Tamerton Foliot to Friary (and branches) on the SR. There are diagrams and detailed descriptions of each box in the area, many of which Larry worked, as well as his own reminiscences, and details of how each box was worked. There is also a wealth of information such as Special Instructions, Special Bell Codes, and some proposed signalling schemes.

This covers in 170 pages the history of signal boxes at some 190 locations on the former L&YR lines between Preston, Chorley and Bolton on the one hand, and Todmorden, Colne and Hellifield on the other. The result of several years' research, the book comprises brief histories of each box, plus appendices dealing with the box and frame designs used by the L&Y and its successors, the internal equipment of the boxes, and traffic patterns on the lines concerned. Over 160 diagrams and some 44 photographs are also included, illustrating the various types of box in the area.

2004 Signalling Atlas and Signal Box Directory

The 2004 Edition of Peter Kay’s publication of 1997 has been produced by the Society in liaison with its previous author. The information is accurate for 1 January 2004 and an innovation in this Edition is colour maps produced by David Allen.

The book sets down details of every known GW signal box and is the result of many years' research. It includes six diagrams and 55 black and white photographs. The hardback version, if ordered from SRS Book Sales at the full price by the end of May 2008, includes the CD-ROM.
