The diagrams published in these volumes were assembled by John Swift during his work over many years across the Midland Division and later the whole London Midland Region. The were originally prepared as an aide-memoire for use in discussions of local operating problems, and are based on personal observations and the official drawings prepared for operating purposes, rather than on the more usual signalling sources.

In general the drawings show the situation in the period 1955-1960; the layouts are not necessarily those at the date of closure.
